Friends,
From the Old Testament’s Second Book of Kings comes the tale of “passing the mantle” – the symbolic handing of the prophet’s task and talent, from Elijah to Elisha. While the former departs heavenward in a chariot of fire, the latter, who has earlier requested a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, collects the discarded cloak and uses it to cross the Jordan again on dry land. This week the there was another passing of the mantle (or apron). St Columba’s elder Ben Gourlay stepped down from his role after twelve years as Hospitality Convener and some five decades of providing hospitality at St Columba’s. A contribution beyond measure.
Assuming that responsibility, fellow elder, Colin MacKinnon. Elisha went on to perform various miracles, but it would be unfair to expect the same from Colin – though Elisha’s turning of bad water into clean water (II Kings 2:19-22) and making the widow’s oil to fill many jars (II Kings 4:1-7) might be exactly the skills required to keep Health & Safety and/or unexpected late arriving guests, satisfied!
Also stepping down from the Hospitality Committee were Lilias Gillies and Helen Miller. Two individuals who have contributed a colossal amount to the provision of food and refreshment under the St Columba’s roof, across many years and innumerable occasions. So, it is fitting to take a moment to appreciate all those who have in the past, and those who continue to offer food on the table – that tangible sign of welcome and community – whether it is to visiting dignitaries, homeless guests, congregational members or visitors passing through.
It has been said that “food is always about more than just food.” Where it is an expression of welcome, friendship, generosity and care, it is a fitting reminder of that other meal – bread broken and shared, and wine poured out – reminder of the one whose feast it is and whose way we seek to follow.

Lent Appeal 2025 – Caxton Youth Organisation. Registered Charity 1090549.
The Caxton Youth Organisation is a small local Westminster charity, based in Pimlico with Clubs Rooms that are in the basement area of a council housing estate. The charity is already known to us as it was the recipient of our Lent Appeal 2011. Founded in 1948 by a couple of local residents in response to much needed help and support for young people aged 11 to 25 years who have learning disabilities and young people with autism. It provides crucial support for local families with evening clubs three times a week: fantastic opportunities to make friends, drama workshops, play games, life-skills, basic cooking lessons for the older ones. The charity also helps with employment applications, finding work, or training.
With your donations we hope to raise enough funds to pay for a five-day outdoor residential trip at a purpose-built centre in the countryside for eight young people plus three staff. Donations would help cover the costs for accommodation, catering, staffing, activities and transport to the centre. A chance for them to experience the countryside and activities such as abseiling, high ropes courses, archery, pond dipping.
We are delighted to welcome guest speakers for a brief talk on the charity during the morning service on: Sunday 13 April (Palm Sunday) – Esther Norman, Interim – CEO
